I got my site in 2008, as part of the National Geographic All Roads photography award supported by liveBooks. It was the most exciting part of the award since it was something that had a longer term effect on my international career. We worked together with a designer to achieve the look that I wanted: something simple and professional that allowed the photographs to speak for themselves. The editSuite makes it so much easier to change and update content, I could not chase down my web designer in Baku, Azerbaijan where I used to live each time I wanted to upload a new portfolio. I can now change the entire website in one day and more importantly, I can do it myself, something that was unimaginable to me before!
I currently live in Cairo, Egypt and with my site being part of an international platform, this move did not present any problems. I use my site all the time both with editorial clients and print buyers. I also like the way liveBooks is keeping the pulse on all the latest technological developments, e.g. making websites i-Pad compatible with only one click, introducing Scaler etc. I think the ease of the new website and the smart design has increased the traffic to my site and therefore exposure to my work.
Rena Effendi, Photojournalist
Rena Effendi’s early documentary work focused on the oil industry’s effects on people’s lives in her own country. As a result, she followed the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline from Azerbaijan through Georgia to Turkey, collecting stories along the way. This work of six years was published in 2009 in her first book Pipe Dreams: A Chronicle of Lives Along the Pipeline.
Effendi’s international awards include the Fifty Crows Documentary award and the Getty Images Editorial grant. In 2008 Rena won the National Geographic All Roads Photography award. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Visa Pour l’Image Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan.
