Luke Edmonson

I was born into a photographic household literally littered with Browines, Rolleis, Nikons and Hasselblads. Growing up with a father and grandfather as photographers surrounded me with chemicals, Polaroids, and all the magical props that collect in a studio over the years. Sure it was cool on some level, but I always wondered why my father couldn’t be like everyone else’s dad — a doctor, lawyer, or some other respectable profession. That is until I went off to study at Centenary College of Louisiana and felt a hole inside me that only Art could fill. It was there that a drawing class taught me the importance of mark making and solving problems visually. That is essential what any creative person does — as artists, we are just the first to claim it.

The first time I entered the darkroom for my own pursuits I was hooked. It was then that a moment of realization occurred about how wonderful the life of a photographer can be. Every day is different, you have permission to go places you could never go otherwise, do things you would never do otherwise, and work with creative and dynamic colleagues on a daily basis! And yet, I was still rebelling, so I pursued my BA in film which meant that my pictures “moved” while my father’s were “still.” What it really taught me was the art of story telling.

The subjects that I find most interesting to shoot are people — at monumental moments in their life — be it weddings, graduations, births or funerals … anywhere that families come together at that rare moment in time where the emotions flow and stories unfold rapidly. Seeing them happen in front of your lens is voyeuristic by it’s very nature. But by studying them, you learn to anticipate rather than react to them. Drawing from these experiences allows me to walk freely through intimate moments for a culturally diverse worldwide clientele.

My proudest professional moment was when my father and I decided to form our own studio, which has been blessed and honored by our clients, industry, and peers. By combining our distinctive styles, David and I, as EDMONSON Photographers are able to provide dramatic imagery for a range of needs including weddings, portraits, and commercial. When we are not spending our time pursuing our passion, we find ways to give back to others on local, national and international levels by giving our time, sharing our knowledge with other photographers, or mentoring others who reach out for encouragement.
